The fire broke out at about 11 a.m. in a two-story building on Lindley Street between Herbert and Winton streets in the city's South End.

Six people were inside the four-apartment building when the fire started, said Assistant Fire Chief Michael Caldaroni.

The two who jumped from the porch were "very luck they only suffered minor injuries," Caldaroni said. The residents also threw their dog out of the window to escape the blaze, he said. The dog was not injured.

The two were transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport.

Four others got out of the ground floor without sustaining any injuries, Caldaroni said.

The porches collapsed on the home, which is not habitable. At least six people are without a place to live. The Red Cross arrived on the scene to offer assistance.

The fire in the four-apartment building was being investigated, he said. Investigators believed it started on first floor. The blaze was extinguished, but firefighters remained on the scene putting out hot spots, he said.

The house that directly abuts the property was evacuated but never in any danger, according to Caldaroni.
