The 17-year-old boy was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for treatment, but he died of his injuries, Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara told the Post.

The teenager, who was from Fairfield, was not identified. The incident remains under investigation.

The Fairfield Fire Department responded to a report of a possible drowning at 6:10 p.m. Saturday at the pond at 757 Sturges Road, Assistant Fire Chief Roger A Caisse said.

Witnesses told firefighters that they were swimming in the pond at the park area, which is north of I-95 and flows into Southport Harbor. One of their friends could not get back to shore and slipped below the surface, Caisse said.

Fire and police crews immediately began rescue efforts, performing multiple free dives in an attempt to locate the victim, he said.

The victim was found submerged in about 15 feet of water and was brought to the surface with the assistance of a police diver at about 7 p.m., Caisse said.

Fairfield fire and American Medical Response members immediately initiated advanced life support treatment, he said.

The patient was taken to St. Vincent's for treatment, Caisse said.

No further information was available Sunday afternoon on the incident.
