BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Shirley C. Weintraub, daughter of the late Morris and Jennie Bufferd, and wife to David for more than 70 years, died Wednesday, Feb. 3. She was 90.
Born Nov. 9, 1925, in Bridgeport, she graduated from Bridgeport's Bassick High School. She and her husband, David, were teenage sweethearts and married in December 1945 after he returned from serving in the U.S. Army.
She was the office manager and bookkeeper for more than 25 years at her family's cleaning contracting business. She was a longtime resident of West Hartford, where she and David raised their three children. She always made her family’s Jewish holidays and Thanksgivings special by spending endless hours in the kitchen making chopped liver, chicken soup and kugel. She also loved to needlepoint, knit and was passionate about flowers.
She and her husband traveled extensively, including trips to Israel, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Italy, China, Australia, New Zealand and throughout the United States.
She and her husband were founding members of Beth El Temple and Cliffside Country Club and were members of Tumblebrook Country Club. She was a member of ORT, Hadassah and volunteered for many years at UConn Medical Center.
She was predeceased by her brother, Mendy Bufferd, and his wife Pat, as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews; and her three children, Jay and his wife, Sandra, Leni and Sue; grandchildren Jeffrey Weintraub and Dr. Julie Carlson (Aaron); and great-grandson Caleb.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, with Rabbi Rosen and Rabbi Kessler officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, 51 Jackson St., Avon.
Family and friends are invited after the interment to a short service at 596F Mountain Road, West Hartford.
