Rev. John Chalupa, 100, Longtime Bridgeport Resident

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Longtime Bridgeport resident Rev. John Chalupa died on Monday, May 2. He was 100.

Born in Lansford, Pa., Chalupa was a resident of Bridgeport for more than 60 years before moving to Middlebrook Farm assisted living facility in Trumbull.

He attended mission school in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia for two years, graduated from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. and gained his Bachelor Degree and later his Masters of Divinity Degree from Mt. Airy Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa.

Chalupa served churches in New York and New Jersey before becoming pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in 1947.

He served as pastor there for 35 years, leading worship services in both English and Slovak and participating in countless church activities.

He helped to organize the Dorcas Mission Guild, a charitable organization within the church that is still active today.

Upon retirement, Chalupa was designated Pastor Emeritus of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and continued to serve for many years as an assistant pastor, assisting the Slovak services and ministry for the congregation.

Chalupa is survived by his daughters and their families; Barbara (Chalupa) and Tony Andrade, Susan (Chalupa) and Harry Jukna, and Dorie (Chalupa) Behn; six grandsons; Christopher Andrade and his wife Maggie, Stephen Andrade and his wife Kerrie, Kenneth Andrade and his wife TY, Eric Jukna, Justin Behn and Kevin Behn.

He also is survived by his brother, Martin Chalupa and great-grandchildren Mark, Meghan, Timothy, Autumn and Ellie Andrade and Issabella Jukna.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 406 White Plains Road, in Trumbull with Rev. Thomas S. Drobena officiating.

Interment will be at Mt. Grove Cemetery in a private ceremony for the family.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 5 from 4-8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Trumbull.
