BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Jean Marie Bassey, 84, of Bridgeport, daughter of the late Louis and Bella Young Bourisk, died Tuesday, July 14.
Born in Mexico, Maine, she was a local resident for many years. An active and energetic person, she had a lifelong career and hobbies, she was the president of the "Y" Teens Maine Chapter in 1949, and was offered an executive position in New York for the YWCA. She held a variety of jobs working at D.O.D., was a teacher at a Business College in New Haven and received top security clearance at Sikorsky for the Black Hawk Project, where she worked until April of 2014 at the age of 83.
Among her hobbies, she enjoyed competitive ballroom dancing, swimming, skiing, ice skating, motorcycling, car racing as a competitor, and flying Cessna planes and gliders. She also was a sharp shooter, wood carver, member of St. Nicholas Women's Auxiliary and St. Nicholas Church for over 30 years.
Survivors include her son, Timothy Bassey, of Bridgeport; Cecelia Jacobs of Stratford; and two grandchildren of Stratford.
Calling hours will take place on Friday, July 17 from 9-10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 5458 Park Ave., Bridgeport. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Church followed by interment in Park Cemetery, Bridgeport.
The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St., Bridgeport, has been entrusted with the services.
