BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Evelyn (Abernethy) Amaral, 80, of Bridgeport, the wife of Ernest Amaral, died Friday, Aug. 21, at Cambridge Health Center.
Born in New London to Russell and Margaret Abernethy, Amaral lived most of her life in Connecticut. She lived in Bridgeport and New London and, for a short time, in Long Beach, Calif.
She worked for the city of Bridgeport in the Tax Collector's Office for more than 20 years. She also worked at Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. She taught calligraphy at the Bridgeport Evening Education Program.
She had a love for ceramics and made Christmas trees and other items for anyone and especially for family and friends. She enjoyed shopping on QVC and trips to the casino. Most of all, she treasured spending time with her family and friends during the holidays and special occasions.
She volunteered at St. Augustine Cathedral, working as a receptionist in the rectory, was a lector and taught children in the CCD program.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ernest Amaral; her son, Matthew E. Amaral; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mario and Dorothy Amaral; and nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many close friends.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Parente-Lauro Funeral Home,, 559 Washington Ave., Bridgeport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at St. Augustine Cathedral, 359 Washington Ave., Bridgeport. Entombment will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Garden Mausoleum, Stratford.
