“For many years, this is what our patients have asked for,” said William Jennings, president and CEO of Bridgeport Hospital, which is part of the Yale New Haven system. “We have it all here. I couldn’t be more proud.”
The three-story, 100,000-square-foot outpatient center at 5520 Park Ave. will house new and expanded services of Bridgeport Hospital, Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and Northeast Medical Group, including an outpatient surgery center and gastroenterology suite. At the center of it all is the Norma Pfriem Healing Garden, providing respite for patients and families with benches, cafe tables and a babbling waterfall.
The center is located just off Exit 47 of the Merritt Parkway at the borders of Bridgeport, Fairfield, Trumbull and nearby Easton. The parking garage is technically located in Bridgeport.
“Location, location, location. That’s what they say in real estate,” said Bridgeport Hospital Chief Operating Officer Pam Scaglianini.
Marna Borgstrom, president and CEO of Yale New Haven Health, said she was especially proud of the wide range of comprehensive services that are available at the new Park Avenue site.
“Quality is paramount and convenience is essential,” she said.
The new facility has been planned for nearly a decade with many factors, including nearby wetlands, to be considered by both the hospital team and local authorities, Jennings told the hundreds gathered for the ribbon cutting.
Established more than 130 years ago, Bridgeport Hospital has been affiliated with the Yale network for about 20 years. The partnership had led to continuing improvements and innovative services in the Bridgeport area, said Newman Marsilius III, a hospital board member.
He said the new site is unique in several ways, not the least of which was how well the complex developed.
“This facility was completed on time and on budget,” he said. “How often do you hear that today?”
Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst thanked the hospital administration for choosing to place the complex in Trumbull.
“This has been a long time in the making,” he said. “This is one of the proudest days of my administration.”
