BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Here are some of the stories that topped the news in Bridgeport last week:

  • When they set out to open their new business in Bridgeport, Charlie Ronemus and Zac Weiner wanted to “put a little cleaner image out there for smoke shops.” Stoked, located at 3389 Fairfield Ave., features ceiling-to-floor windows and a well-lit studio.
  • U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-Greenwich), who is seeking re-election to his 4th District seat, said he is proud of the work accomplished in recent years to revitalize Bridgeport, but says more work must be done to restore the city's economic prosperity.
  • Democrats remained optimistic as President Barack Obama canceled his campaign visit for Gov. Dannel Malloy, which had been planned for Wednesday in Bridgeport, to stay in the White House to deal with the Ebola crisis. 
  • Mayor Bill Finch announced the city's first comprehensive safe streets initiative to keep pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists safe in Bridgeport. 
  • Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch was briefed on protocols for treating patients who exhibit Ebola-like symptoms when he met with officials from Bridgeport Hospital and St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
  • When Bridgeport stepped off for its annual Columbus Day Parade, the participants honored a longtime public servant as well as the city's Italian-American heritage: Former Bridgeport Mayor Leonard Paoletta served as grand marshal of the annual parade.

    Jamaica native Karen Gordon has opened Stan’s Jamaican Kitchen at 16 Tunxis Hill Road, on the border of Fairfield and Bridgeport.
