Metro-North Probes Money Missing From Bar Carts At Grand Central

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Metro North riders will temporarily be unable to buy alcohol on train platforms at Grand Central Terminal after the railroad suspended the use of bar carts while it investigates money that has gone missing, according to the Journal News.

The cash-only bar carts are set up on many platforms in Grand Central to sell beverages to commuters, but were gone this week.

The Journal News reported that an unspecified amount of money was discovered to be missing following a complaint from a vendor and a spot audit last month. MTA Inspector General Barry Kluger conducted a full-scale audit, and three Metro North employees have been taken out of service, according to the Journal News.

A spokesperson for Metro North told the Journal News that all 18 commissary carts and two commissary counters were taken out of service on Dec. 8 and will remain closed until the investigation is completed.

The Journal News reported that Kluger has shared the results of the investigation with the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

Riders can still purchase alcohol inside the terminal. It was also announced in September that Metro North would be resuming the use of bar cars on trains.
