Need somewhere upbeat to visit this winter?

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport has some howling good news: Three critically endangered wolf pups were born there Dec. 27, in a heated enclosure.

Zoo staff installed a discreet camera to observe the pups' progress. Images can be accessed by going to the CTBZoo Facebook page here:

"We have the best news to share today," the Connecticut zoo announced.  "Three maned wolf pups have joined our Zoo family! Mom (Bonita) gave birth to the pups on December 27, and since she and Dad (Paulo) have been excellent parents, the pups have been in seclusion with them, growing and getting bigger every day."

They are the first children born to adult maned wolves. The parents are caring for the babies together, as is the norm for this species. Zoo officials called this "a significant birth," because captive breeding can be difficult with maned wolves, and for the fact that this is the first time for this species at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo.

According to a news release from the zoo as reported here, Bonita has paid particular attention to the smallest pup in the litter, separating it from its litter mates to be sure it has time to nurse adequately.
