The April 30 event drew the attendance of state Sen. Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield) and former New York Times columnist and author Bob Herbert, who was the keynote speaker.
The coalition honored Fran Rabinowitz, superintendent of Bridgeport Public Schools, with the organization’s Jan Park Child Advocacy Award.
John Santa, founder and chairman of the Malta Justice Initiative, received the Cesar Batalla Community Service Award from the coalition for his work in criminal justice reform.
“When you bring individuals together like Fran Rabinowitz, John Santa and Bob Herbert, who are so passionate and committed to children and families and the working poor, it’s inspiring and motivating to continue the work,” Mary Pat Healy, executive director of the coalition, said in a press release. "It confirms that we do have the tremendous power to shape policies and practices that work towards improving the lives and well-being of our children and families.”
Hwang, a longtime supporter of the the coalition, said in a press release he always looks forward to the annual breakfast fundraiser.
“I am pleased that so many legislators and community leaders attended to show their support,” Hwang said. “And while the words were inspiring, we must let them serve as a call to action to do everything in our power to ensure the children of Bridgeport -and all children, for that matter - have the brightest possible future in a safe, supportive and thriving community.”
