BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- It may be cold outside but inside Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport on Wednesday, Dec. 14, it was warm with the sharing of ideas and holidays traditions from across the globe.

Twins and Culinary Dynamos Judy Vig, of Monroe, and Joy Paoletti of Trumbull , visited MLC to share cookies and talk cooking customs. Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico were some of the locales on their "sweet" agenda.

The mission of MLC is to provide literacy and life skills training to low-income women. The need for women's literacy education is striking. Consider the following statistics:

  • 781 million people in the world are illiterate; 64 percent of them are women.
  • 36 million Americans can’t read. Many who can, read below the sixth-grade level.
  • One out of every five women in Bridgeport does not have a high school diploma.
  • Half of all Bridgeport families speak a language other than English at home.

The event was live-streamed on Facebook and broadcast by Norwalk-based Hoopla-Ha-Only Good News.

Go HERE for an earlier Daily Voice story on the twins and their cooking adventures. The Food Network Challenge stars are part of a new HooplaHa digital series, Cooking with Twins , which debuted in late November.
