BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The founder of a Bridgeport nonprofit organization recently returned to her hometown as one of a handful of people selected to give a TEDx Talk.
Tanisha Akinloye started Empowering Through Beauty Inc., a Bridgeport 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
She gave her talk in Tryon, N.C., on Sept. 12.
Empowering Through Beauty offers cosmetology services, education, outreach and empowerment opportunities to those in need. Akinloye's talk focused on empowering young women of "less fortunate circumstances."
Her organization has worked with numerous Connecticut shelters and hosts annual events providing services such as hair coloring, haircuts and styling, hair treatments, manicures and facials. The group also holds educational workshops on hair and makeup application, résumé writing, job training and self-empowerment.
When Akinloye returns to her hometown, which she does at least once a year, she holds events to assist single mothers and low-income women there, she says.
The TEDx Talk, which featured about a dozen speakers, was given to a crowd of more than 100 people.
"This TED talk was a defining event in my life,” Akinloye said. “To be able to stand up on a stage and pour out my heart and spread the message of empowerment -- I would never have thought that I would have been able to do that."
