The center of a controversial, $7.4 million restoration project, the new facility sports a 2,600-square-foot gathering room and a 1,500-square-foot covered deck overlooking Long Island Sound.
“I learned to swim here 80 years ago and I think it’s beautiful,” said lifelong resident Lois Smith. “This is fabulous. I’m glad (First Selectman) Mike (Tetreau) fought for it.”
The Penfield Building Committee considered a full 11 options for the space before coming up with a plan that would keep the building safe and appealing for rentals.
“This was not easy,” said committee Chair Jim Bradley. “This building, as you know, had some really serious problems.”
The site includes locker facilities and a newly paved parking lot.
Things are looking good well ahead of summer, according to Parks & Recreation Director Anthony Calabrese.
“What else can I say other than ‘wow,’” he said. “Our pavilion is back and better than ever.”
