The feature film, “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City,” highlights Jane Jacobs, an urbanist and activist whose writings and advocacy championed community preservation in city planning, something of interest to many Bridgeport residents.
The festival is a collaboration of the Bridgeport Downtown Special Services District, the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County and Connecticut Main Street Center. Sponsor support comes from Bijou Square, Harral Security Wheeler, Forstone Capital and the City of Bridgeport.
“We are pleased to be partnering with these wonderful organizations to have this opportunity to draw attention to the importance of historic cultural preservation,” said Angela Whitford, executive director of the Cultural Alliance.
Jacobs (1916-2006) championed a community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training, but her 1961 treatise “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” introduced groundbreaking ideas on how cities can evolve.
The festival begins at 2 p.m., Oct. 12 with a screening of “Citizen Jane," followed by a talk by Anthony Flint, author of “Wrestling With Moses: How Jane Jacobs Took on New York’s Master Builder and Transformed the American City.”
The afternoon also includes a discussion with David Kooris, director of Rebuild by Design, a reception and guided walking tours of City Lights Gallery and the new McLevy Square development.
On Sunday, the group will screen seven short films about ordinary citizens shaping their communities ending with a re-screening of “Citizen Jane.”
