Survivor Speaks At Swim Breast Cancer Luncheon In Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Writer, television producer and cancer survivor Geralyn Lucas will bring her wit and grace to the stage as guest speaker as St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound hosts its 19th annual breast cancer luncheon Friday afternoon at the Holiday Inn in downtown Bridgeport.

At age 27, Lucas was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. She responded to the experience with her witty and inspiring book, “Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy,” which became a best seller and was later made into a television movie by Lifetime.

“The experience gave Geralyn newly found courage and a sense of belief in herself she never knew she had,” said Deborah Cox of SWIM Across the Sound. “Since then, she has been able to talk about her experiences and how she overcame the serious challenge of this disease.”

"This is a universal story for women," she said. "A lot of people say going through a serious illness makes you look deeply at who you are, and that can be true. But you don't have to have breast cancer to do that."

Lucas has written a new book, called “Then Came Life.”  The book is about the challenges that Lucas, now 45, faces today as a cancer survivor.

The organization will also honor Trumbull resident Joan Trefz, who has been involved as a committee member and volunteer for the Breast Cancer Luncheon since its inception.

Trefz  is also involved in other activities to help cancer patients, including acting as a co-chair for the Seton Gift Shop, which offers a variety of products especially geared to meet the needs of cancer patients.

All proceeds from the event will help local women battling breast cancer and will provide free mammograms for the uninsured and underinsured. Tickets are $125; go here to register. If you can't attend the attend but would like to make a donation, go here.
