Gas prices are up as much as 10 cents in some states from a week ago following the Fourth of July holiday, but prices at the pump are down a cent per gallon in Connecticut after reaching a five-year peak this summer.

After nearly four months of increasing prices, Connecticut’s average price per gallon of regular self-serve gas has dropped a cent this week, down to an average of  $3.08, while the national average at $2.87, up one cent from a week ago, but down six from a month ago.

In Connecticut, AAA’s weekly survey of gas prices found that the average price per gallon in the Nutmeg State’s six regions are:

  • Bridgeport: $3.16;
  • Hartford: $3.05;
  • Lower Fairfield County: $3.14;
  • New Haven/Meriden: $3.07;
  • New London/Norwich: $3.11;
  • Windham/Middlesex: $3.06.

Despite the modest decrease, prices nationally are still up nearly 61 cents from a year ago, when the average price per gallon was $2.26. In Connecticut, the price is up 60 cents from a year ago.

“Gasoline demand remains very strong this summer,” AAA Northeast Spokesman Fran Mayko said. “And it’s this demand that’s driving prices higher, even though they’ve been relatively stable nationally.”

“Demand for gasoline this summer remains very strong week-over-week, driving gas prices higher alongside rising crude prices,” AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano, AAA added. “Today motorists are seeing gas for $2.76 or more at 56 percent of gas stations across the country.

“The higher prices in recent weeks seem to be influencing driving habits. While consumer gasoline demand remains strong, it’s slowing and not growing.”
